Drain Cleaning FAQ
My kitchen sink drains slow — do I need a plumber or will store-bought drain opener work?
Skip the chemical. Sodium hydroxide and sulfuric acid openers sit on the blockage, generate heat, and attack older cast iron along with the rubber gaskets in P-traps and disposal boots. If the clog does not clear, that caustic liquid is still standing there when someone opens the trap. A cable machine or jetter removes grease physically. Tell us if you already poured something down.
What's the difference between snaking and hydro jetting?
A cable machine bores a hole through the blockage and pulls back roots or debris, which restores flow but leaves the pipe wall still coated. Hydro jetting pushes a high-pressure hose with rear-facing nozzles that scours the full pipe diameter back to bare wall, which is what grease and scale actually need. Jetting is not appropriate on pipe that is already cracked or badly deteriorated.
Why does the same drain keep clogging after you clear it?
Because clearing a path is not the same as removing the cause. Recurring clogs usually mean grease coating the pipe wall, root intrusion at a joint, heavy scale in old cast iron, a belly where the line has settled, or a broken section. We run a camera to see which one it is, then match the method to that finding instead of cabling it again every few months.
Do you have a camera you can put down the line?
Yes. A sewer camera with a locating sonde goes in through the cleanout, so we can see roots, offset joints, cracks, scale, and low spots, and then mark the depth and position on the ground above. It is the difference between guessing at a repair and pointing at exact footage. We record the run so you can see what we saw.
All my drains are backing up at once, not just one.
When multiple fixtures back up together, especially the lowest ones like a tub or floor drain, the problem is downstream in the main line rather than at any single fixture. Stop running water immediately, including the washing machine and dishwasher. We access through the main cleanout, and if the house does not have one, that is usually the next thing to address.
Where is my cleanout, and why do you keep asking about it?
It is a capped fitting giving direct access to the drain line, usually outside near the foundation or out at the property line. The plumbing code requires a two-way cleanout near the property line on most sewer connections, and plenty of older Los Angeles homes have one that has been paved over or buried. Locating or installing one makes every future service faster and cheaper.
Do you need a permit to clean a drain?
No. Cabling and cleaning are maintenance and do not require a permit. That changes once we are replacing pipe. A sewer line repair, a spot repair, a new cleanout, or a trenchless liner is permitted work through LADBS in the City of Los Angeles, County Public Works in unincorporated areas, or the Santa Cruz County building department. We tell you which side of that line your job falls on.
Tree roots keep getting into my sewer line. Can that be fixed for good?
Cabling with a root cutter clears them, but roots return to the same joint because that joint is still open and still leaking the moisture they follow. Longer-term options are jetting plus a root treatment, spot repair of the damaged section, or lining the pipe so there is no open joint left to enter. Camera footage tells us how many entry points exist.
How much do you charge to clear a drain?
We price after seeing the situation. What moves it: which fixture or line is affected, whether there is an accessible cleanout or we have to pull a toilet or work through a roof vent, the length of the run, whether cabling or jetting is called for, and whether a camera inspection is warranted. You get a firm number before the machine comes off the truck.
Is hydro jetting going to damage my old pipes?
It can, which is why we camera first on older homes. Clay, Orangeburg, and thin-walled cast iron that is already cracked or scaled through can fail under jetting pressure. If the camera shows compromised pipe, we cable instead and talk about repair options. On sound pipe carrying grease or scale, jetting is the correct tool and does not harm the pipe wall.
My garbage disposal caused this, didn't it?
Frequently, yes. Disposals grind food fine enough to travel a few feet and then settle, and the usual offenders are grease, coffee grounds, rice, pasta, and fibrous vegetable skins. Grease is the real problem: it goes down warm and liquid and congeals on the pipe wall as it cools. Run cold water during grinding and for 30 seconds after, and pour grease into a container.
Do you do this up in Santa Cruz as well?
Yes. We run drain service from both offices, 5301 Beethoven St in Los Angeles covering LA County and 303 Potrero St in Santa Cruz covering Santa Cruz County, Monday through Saturday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Sunday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Cabling, hydro jetting, and camera inspection are available out of both locations.
