Hydro Jetting: Common Questions
Why run a camera before jetting instead of just clearing the line?
Because the equipment has to match the pipe and the blockage. The camera shows the material, the diameter, whether a belly is holding water, and whether a joint is already offset or cracked. Jetting a line with a broken section can push debris into the break or wash soil out from around it. The same camera confirms the line is genuinely clear when we finish.
How much pressure do you use, and can it damage my pipes?
Drain jetters used on homes and small commercial lines generally run between 1,500 and 4,000 psi, and flow, measured in gallons per minute, does most of the work carrying debris out. Pressure alone does not clean a line. Damage happens when the wrong pressure or nozzle meets compromised pipe, which is why we inspect first and select equipment to the pipe material and its condition.
Is grease cleaned differently from roots?
Yes, mostly through nozzle choice. Grease and soft sludge respond to a rotating nozzle that scours the pipe wall, with cleaning jets angled roughly 21 to 45 degrees. Roots need a cutting head. Hard scale inside old cast iron needs a chain flail or knocker, sized to the pipe because it can damage thin wall. Flushing nozzles with shallower angles then move the debris downstream.
When would you tell me not to jet the line?
When the camera shows the pipe cannot take it: badly corroded cast iron with paper-thin wall, cracked or separated clay joints, Orangeburg that has already deformed, or a section with soil visible through a break. We also stop when there is no cleanout and the only access is a toilet flange or roof vent, because we cannot control where the water goes. Jetting then hides a needed repair.
What is the difference between snaking and jetting?
A cable auger punches through the blockage and pulls back some material. It restores flow but leaves the pipe wall coated. Hydro jetting uses water to scour the full inside diameter, so grease, sludge, and scale travel out to the main instead of waiting to catch the next thing. Snaking is the fast fix for an active stoppage; jetting is what changes how often it recurs.
How often should a restaurant get jetted compared with a house?
Commercial kitchens commonly run monthly or quarterly because grease reloads the line continuously. A single-family home with no history of stoppages often needs no routine jetting at all, and camera evidence should drive the interval. Homes with mature trees or old cast iron tend to land on annual or every-other-year service. Jetting waste goes to the sanitary sewer and may never be discharged to a street or storm drain.
Will jetting get rid of tree roots for good?
No. A cutting head removes roots back to the pipe wall and restores full diameter, but they return through the same crack or joint that let them in. Jetting buys time and shows how fast regrowth happens. Permanent removal means repairing or replacing the section where roots enter. The camera tells you whether that entry point is a single joint or spread across the run.
Do I need a permit for hydro jetting?
No. Cleaning an existing drain or sewer is maintenance rather than an alteration, so LADBS does not require a plumbing permit for the jetting itself. That changes once the work becomes a repair. Replacing a section of building drain or building sewer is modification of a drainage system and does require a permit and an inspection. We tell you which side of that line your job falls on.
My house has old cast iron. Can it be jetted?
Often yes, and descaling is one of the main reasons to jet cast iron. Decades of tuberculation build a rough rust layer that narrows the pipe and catches waste, and a chain knocker or descaling head removes it. The camera has to confirm sound metal remains. Where the bottom of the pipe has already channeled through, descaling opens a hole instead of cleaning, and that line needs replacement.
What decides the price of a jetting job?
Access matters most. An existing exterior cleanout is simple, while pulling a toilet or opening a roof vent to reach the line adds labor. Pipe diameter, length of the run, the material, the type of buildup, and whether camera inspection is included all factor in. A 2-inch kitchen branch is not the same job as a 4-inch main. A firm number follows the diagnosis.
