A straightforward faucet swap is often a quick job. It stops being quick when the shutoffs under the sink are old and seized, the supply lines are corroded, or the old faucet has been in place long enough to fight you — which in a lot of Santa Cruz homes, it has.

Repair or replace?

A dripping faucet is rarely the faucet giving up — it is usually a worn cartridge, washer, or O-ring, and that is a repair, not a replacement. Worth fixing promptly: a faucet dripping once per second wastes thousands of gallons a year, which matters more here than most places given how tight water supply is in this county.

Replacement makes more sense when the finish is corroding through, the body is cracked, parts for an older model are no longer made, or you simply want a different fixture. We will tell you which situation you are in rather than defaulting to the more expensive one.

Why it takes longer in older homes

A lot of Santa Cruz County housing predates 1960, and older plumbing turns a ten-minute faucet swap into real work. The angle-stop shutoff valves under the sink corrode and seize, so they will not close — and sometimes will not reopen without being replaced. Supply lines go brittle. On the oldest homes the faucet may be connected in a way no modern fixture matches, needing adapters or new supply work. None of it is dramatic, but it is why we look before we quote, so the price is the price.

Supplying your own faucet

Plenty of our customers pick out a faucet they love and have us fit it. That is completely fine. The one thing worth doing before you buy is checking the hole configuration of your sink — single-hole versus three-hole, and the spread — because a beautiful faucet that does not match your sink’s drilling means either a new sink or a deck plate.
