The honest answer usually comes down to age. A tank heater under about eight years old with a failed thermostat, element, or thermocouple is normally worth repairing. Past twelve years, money spent on repairs is money spent on a unit that is going to fail anyway.
Some symptoms point to replacement regardless of age. Rusty hot water, water pooling under the tank, or a tank that rumbles hard during heating usually means corrosion or heavy sediment inside — neither is repairable.
Others are genuinely fixable: no hot water at all, water that runs lukewarm, a pilot that will not stay lit, or a leaking valve rather than a leaking tank.
Standard tank. Lowest up-front cost, simplest to service, and what most Santa Cruz County homes already have. A straight replacement is the fastest option when a heater fails unexpectedly.
Tankless. Heats on demand, takes up less space, and lasts longer than a tank. Costs more up front and, on a gas unit, often needs venting and gas line changes that add to the job.
Heat pump. The most efficient option available, pulling heat from surrounding air rather than generating it. Worth understanding before you replace a failing tank with another tank, particularly given what is available in rebates — see heat pump water heaters in Santa Cruz.
We will tell you which makes sense for your house, your fuel type, and where the unit sits. Sometimes that is the cheapest tank on the truck.
